10 scholarships for new UCL MSc in Crime and Forensic Science including Met Crime Academy training

As the only UK forensics course to offer training with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Crime Academy (the agency that trains forensic practitioners for the Met police force, the UK's largest policing organisation), UCL's new MSc in Crime and Forensic Science will train graduates to think strategically and critically about crime and forensic science, equipping them with skills suitable for a wide range of careers, and for career progression.

This new multidisciplinary programme is provided by departments across UCL including Security and Crime Science, Psychology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Biology, Archaeology and Laws. Core modules will concentrate on understanding the scientific principles behind forensic science and how these are interpreted in the courtroom. Optional modules will include forensic archaeology, molecular biology and the psychology behind decision making, enabling students to specialise in a particular area of forensic science if they wish. In addition to UCL-based modules there will be a practical component provided by the
Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Crime Academy: students can attend a week-long course on crime scene investigation at their specialised laboratory facilities in London.

These courses bring together students and practitioners. Graduate students come from a variety of disciplines (both engineering and social sciences) and practitioners come from organisations such as the Met Police, British Transport Police, Serious and Organised Crime Agency, MoD, Transport for London, City of London Police.

By the end of the programme students will be prepared (or have their existing skills enhanced) for a variety of different career paths including research, crime investigation, forensic science provision, policy making and public sector careers such as the civil service. The course is housed in the UCL JDI Centre for the Forensic Sciences, which is part of the UCL Department of Security and Crime Science (SCS).

There are 10 scholarships available for various courses this year. Please visit the website or come to the open evening
on 21st Feb, 2012 6-8pm at UCL - see website for details:

About the UCL Department of Security and
Crime Science (SCS)

The SCS (formerly the UCL Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science) is the first university department in the world devoted specifically to reducing crime. It does this through teaching, research, public policy analysis and by the dissemination of evidence-based information on crime reduction. Their mission is to change crime policy and practice. In the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) 75% of the department's research activity was judged to be internationally excellent or world leading, placing the department joint second in the UK in the relevant unit of assessment. The department, based at University College London, is consistently ranked one of the world's top universities, currently runs the
highly popular MSc in Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism and the MSc in Crime Science as well as the new UCL JDI Centre for the Forensic Sciences and the £17m international Security Science Doctoral Research Training Centre.
