Commissioner supports charity walk for Care of Police Survivors (COPS)

Police and Crime Commissioner Bob Jones is to welcome a group of people at the end of an 18 mile sponsored charity walk by staff from One Stop stores to raise money for COPS.

The charity is dedicated to helping the families of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, rebuild their lives. It aims to ensure that survivors have all the help they need to cope with such a tragedy, and that they remain part of the police family.

Bob Jones said: “Our police officers have such a high a level of commitment to the communities they serve, that they are willing to put themselves at risk in order to protect others.  When this personal sacrifice extends to the loss of a life, it is not only a tragic loss to their family and friends but to our community as a whole.”

“This sponsored walk is about the community showing its concern for the friends and families of officers who have died in the course of duty.  It recognises the sacrifice that has been made in their personal lives and the desire to give something back.  I welcome this fundraising event, which shows the community is thankful for the dedication of police officers who have been killed. It is good to know that the community is willing to go the extra mile to give support to their families.”

The walk will set off from Bilston Police Station and finish at Steelhouse Lane Police station in Birmingham on Friday 28 March.  Bob Jones and representatives from COPS will be waiting at Steelhouse Lane police station at 1730 to thank and congratulate the walkers for their efforts.

Mel Johal, charity event organiser and Store Manager of One Stop said: “We regularly raise funds for charities and are encouraged to focus on local causes. The reason I wanted to support COPS was my desire to give something back to our police and their families.  I am pleased to have convinced several other local managers that by helping the people who work to keep us safe, we are also helping to encourage closer relationships between people in our communities."
