Authority chairman re-elected for final term
Wednesday, 27 June, 2012
Nottinghamshire Police Authority chairman Jon Collins today received the unanimous backing of his fellow members to serve a final term in the role.
The decision was taken at the Authority's AGM (27 June 2012) during which members also re-elected vice chairs Glynn Gilfoyle and Mike Quigley.
The consistent leadership structure will ensure a seamless start to what will be a challenging period as the Authority continues its preparations to hand over responsibilities to the incoming Police and Crime Commissioner in November.
Mr Collins, who is also leader of Nottingham City Council, will be embarking on his third term as chairman and says it will be very much business as usual for the Authority, despite the transition pressures and continuing economic uncertainty.
He said: "The next five months will be extremely important for the Authority and will provide no opportunity for complacency or resting on our laurels. As an organisation, we have driven impressive improvements in performance and crime reduction in recent years and will remain as determined as ever to push for more to provide the incoming PCC with the best possible start.
"The increase in council tax precept agreed earlier this year has enabled us to invest in sustaining officer numbers and recruiting more PCSOs. This strengthened police presence will not only provide greater reassurance to residents but also means we have effectively more feet on the ground to tackle the crimes they worry about most.
"We've also successfully negotiated our finances to balance the budget and meet our savings target of £10.3m - as well as identifying a further £11m to bring increased efficiency to the force and ensure we are making the best possible use of taxpayers' money.
"All this will ensure the PCC inherits an effective, financially-stable organisation with the key ingredients needed for future success."
