Weekend of Action in South West Fife

Wednesday, 12 January, 2011

Last Weekend (Friday, 7th and Saturday 8th January 2011), police officers based in the South West Fife area took part in a "Weekend of Action" in the Rosyth and Inverkeithing areas.

The operation consisted of three distinct phases, the first involving dayshift officers focusing attention on detecting crimes, the second with backshift officers operating in plain clothes targeting known hotspots in relation to anti-social behaviour and finally the nightshift officers focusing their efforts on vehicle related crimes and offences.

This operation was supplemented by local Special Constables, with an additional 8 officers attending for duty to assist over the weekend.

During the initiative, the officers involved cleared up 6 outstanding crimes, issued 4 Anti-Social Behaviour Fixed Penalty Notices, a large number of people were stopped and searched and one male was arrested for being in possession of a knife. In addition, a number of vehicles were stopped in the area. Two drivers were caught drink driving. Whilst carrying out foot patrols both in uniform and in plain clothes, officers found and seized 16 litres of alcohol.

Locally based Police Sergeant Ian Jones, who planned the operation, explained: "This initiative was designed to focus attention from last Friday to Sunday morning on the key issues affecting our communities and its success demonstrated a determination by Police Officers in the South West Fife area to tackle these issues head on."

Local Area Chief Inspector Kevin Woods said: "This is a continuation of our focus to address the issues which local communities and residents identify to us as important to them. Officers from South West Fife will be undertaking similar initiatives over the coming weeks and months to ensure we continue to listen to our communities and in turn address these issues. I am particularly grateful to our local Special Constables who contributed significantly to the success of this operation over the weekend."

He added, "The community also has an important role to play and I take this opportunity again, to invite them to attend their local Community Engagement Meetings to inform us of their concerns and set the local policing priorities, in order that we can continue to work together to make South West Fife an even safer place".

Details of South West Fife Area Community Engagement Meetings are publicised locally and can be found on the Force website www.fife.police.uk. Alternatively South West Fife Area Community Officers can be contacted on 0845 600 5702.
