Special Constables Awarded in the West

Special constables from across West Suffolk have been rewarded for their dedication and hard work over the past year, at an assembly at the British Sugar Social Club in Bury St Edmunds on Monday 9th November.

Around 80 Special Constables from West Suffolk joined together to celebrate their achievements over the past twelve months. The Specials were joined by the Deputy Chief Constable of Suffolk Jacqui Cheer, the Special Constabulary Chief Officer Martin Ashburn, and Western Area Commander, Chief Superintendent David McDonnell, who reviewed the year's work and presented awards to officers from the Special Constabulary who have displayed outstanding dedication and commitment in sometimes challenging circumstances.

These included awards for dealing with a fatal road traffic collision and a serious sexual assault, and for hard work in the community as part of the Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

Six awards were presented for outstanding commitment to the Special Constabulary - the Bryan Riches award went to SC Krystal Walker who serves in Ixworth; the Mick Taylor award was presented to S/Sgt Graham Durrant who serves in Stowmarket; the Turner Shield for the best performing probationer was presented to recently promoted S/Sgt Wayne Sturman who serves in Bury St Edmunds; the Eileen Jacobs Award went to SC David Button, SC Michael Bucher and SC Jonathan Hobbs who all serve in Mildenhall; the Godfrey Challenge Cup was presented to S/Sgt Scott Newbon who is part of the Area Specials Support Team; and the Phil Betson award went to Special Inspector Barbara Zion who serves in Mildenhall.

Several Special Constables were confirmed in their roles, having completed a year's service. Area Merit Awards were presented for outstanding service, to both members of the Special Constabulary and to local Safer Neighbourhood Team officers who have assisted in training and mentoring Special Constables.

Special Superintendent for West Suffolk, Dean Knight, says, "I am proud to see the excellent work rewarded in the awards presented. I have been in post for a year now and it is very pleasing to see how much effort and dedication is continually put in by these volunteers. The Special Constabulary officers have made an extremely valuable contribution to the policing of Suffolk over the past 12 months, ensuring the county stays safe."
