Cape Youth Project
Together, the Cape Youth Project, Hillrise Safer Neighbourhoods team and
Network Rail are helping local young people to stay away from crime by giving
local youngsters the chance to build their own bicycles.
Until very recently there was a shortage of bicycles for Islington Council's Cape Youth Project's bicycle workshop, but, thanks to the intervention of PCSO Bernie
Hayde from Hillrise team, the workshop is no longer in jeopardy as Network Rail has donated 25 bicycles.
When PCSO Hayde heard they were running short of bikes for their workshop, he decided to approach Network Rail to see if
they could give any lost or unclaimed bicycles to the project.
The Network Rail Duty Manager at Kings Cross Station, Mark McKevitt was more than happy to help as they had a large number of unclaimed bicycles. PCSO Hayde's
idea has proven so successful that Network Rail has introduced a new policy to donate unclaimed bikes to charitable causes.
PCSO Hayde said: "Projects like the Cape's bike workshop are an excellent example of young people taking part in positive activities. Working with other agencies, we have ensured the workshop will continue and created a legacy
whereby bikes will be donated to other projects in Islington."
Archie Morrell, Manager of the
Cape Youth Project, said: "The bike donation and the ongoing work by Hillrise team - in particular PSCO Hayde has been
great. The bikes will make a lot of young people very happy and any that participate in making one road worthy will get to keep the bike and receive an accredited award."
