Chief Officer says a fond farewell

Friday, 29 August, 2008

After a 30-year career beginning in Nottinghamshire and for the last eight years serving in North Yorkshire, Assistant Chief Constable Peter Bagshaw is set to bid farewell to life in the operational policing fast-lane.

To mark his final week with the Force, Mr Bagshaw went back to operational policing and joined Inspector Sarah Jane Sanderson on the beat in the Hambleton area.

His duties included foot patrols in Thirsk and Northallerton and the execution of a search warrant at a house in the Northallerton area where a quantity of drugs and stolen property were recovered.

He officially retires from the Force on 4 September, but will then take up a position as Syndicate Director with the National Policing Improvement Agency focusing on senior officer training.

Mr Bagshaw said: "I have absolutely loved working in North Yorkshire for the past nine years. It's a very different policing environment to Nottinghamshire where I started as a constable in 1978. Whilst the policing demands between an urban area like Nottingham contrast markedly with those in North Yorkshire, the challenges here are more varied and just as great. I found people's expectations of the Police are often higher in areas with less crime and it's been a privilege to work with colleagues determined to meet those expectations day-after-day.

"I wish everyone the very best for the future and I am confident that North Yorkshire and the City of York are in safe hands and will continue to be one of the safest places to live in the country."

Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell said:

"Throughout his career Peter has always epitomised the integrity and highest of standards which the public expect and deserve from their police service.

Having worked with Peter over the last fifteen months, as a member of the Strategic Leadership Team, his support and energy have been invaluable. The Force could not be as successful as it is without Peter's dedication to the organisation.

I believe that it is fair to say that all Peter's colleagues and friends within North Yorkshire Police will miss his warm and friendly character and will wish him well for the future."

Mr Bagshaw was appointed as the ACC for North Yorkshire Police in March 2000. In 2003 he became responsible for Territorial Policing across North Yorkshire and the City of York.

He was a Syndicate Director for the 2004 Strategic Command Course at the National Police College and from December 2006 to May 2007 he was the Acting Chief Constable of North Yorkshire. Mr Bagshaw also had responsibility for Protective Services which included Major Crime, Forensics, Counter Terrorism, Firearms, Intelligence and Public Access. Since May 2008 he has been responsible for Human Resources.

From 2001 to 2005, Mr Bagshaw was a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers' Race and Diversity Business Group with the national lead on Mental Health, Disability and Older People's Issues. He was until recently the Regional ACPO lead on the National Information Management Programme (IMPACT).
