Nigel Kettlewell, who is an Area Officer with the Special Constabulary in North Yorkshire Police, was named as the runner-up for this year's Ferrers Trophy at an awards ceremony, organised by the National Policing Improvement Agency, on Thursday 17 June 2010.

The Ferres Trophy is awarded on annual basis to special constables and police service volunteers for a particularly skilled piece of policing, a sustained involvement with a successful community initiative, the application of personal skills to resolve a long standing problem or some other personal or particular contribution.

Nigel received the award for the work he undertook as part of Operation Drystone, which targeted rural crime.

This initiative was aimed at increasing police visibility, boosting confidence and deterring offending in the force. During the operation, 400 vehicles were stopped and checked by police in the rural border areas. The resulted in the arrest of eight people and over 50 breath tests, as well as fixed penalty notices being issued for motoring offences.

Area Officer Nigel Kettlewell, who is based at Easingwold, said: "I am extremely honoured to be given this award. I feel a great deal of pride in the contribution I, and my colleagues in the Special Constabulary, make to improving the quality of life across the area.

"I feel that this award also reflects the time and effort given by all special constables across North Yorkshire and the City of York."

Nick Herbert, Minister for Policing and Criminal Justice, who presented the awards, said: "Special Constables and Police Service Volunteers embody the proud British tradition of people giving up their own time to help others.

"They are a shining example of the Big Society in action demonstrating the role which individuals and communities have in helping to fight crime.

"I want to see more special constables and new ideas to unlock the potential of volunteers in the police workforce.

"I would like to offer my thanks to all the award winners and hope their example will inspire others to offer their services to the community."
