Herts Police Launch Scheme To Help Break The Cycle of Domestic Abuse

Thursday, 18 March, 2010

A NEW COURSE aimed at helping to address abusive behaviour in relationships and help men to take the first steps towards a healthier relationship with their families is being launched across the county.

Entitled 'Healthier Relationships', it hopes to break the cycle of offending and encourage men to make different choices about how they behave with their families.

The first of the courses starts on March 23 and is being managed by DCI Paul Williamson and Jodie Dalzell from Hertfordshire Constabulary's Domestic Violence Policy Unit. The sessions are facilitated by independent consultants Lydia Guthrie and Stephen Morris, who have extensive experience of working with men who have committed acts of domestic abuse.

Paul commented: "This is a new approach to tackling domestic violence in Hertfordshire and I hope it will have a positive impact for families across the county. Whilst we will continue to take robust action against those who commit domestic violence - and we recognise that both men and women commit domestic violence - it's hoped this scheme may help men make a positive change at an early stage to break the cycle of offending for the long-term.

"We will be working closely with our partners, particularly those working in healthcare and emergency treatment, to propose candidates for the scheme but I would also encourage anyone who feels they may benefit to get in touch."
