Kingston University to host major international conference on imaging technologies for crime detection and prevention

Tuesday, 01 December, 2009

Issues surrounding the application of image-based surveillance technologies will be thrown under the spotlight at a key conference to be held at Kingston University's Dorich House museum on Thursday 3 December. The 3rd Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) international conference on 'Imaging for Crime Detection and Prevention' will see participants draw on each other's knowledge and debate the future of technologies such as CCTV.

Although this is the 3rd such conference, this is the first time the IET has allowed an outside organisation to host it on its behalf. Seventy international delegates from as far afield as Asia, Brazil, Australia, China and Japan, as well as Europe, will be congregating at the University for the high-level, one-day conference.

The conference follows other successful events tackling the development and issues surrounding intelligent surveillance systems. It aims to bring together researchers, industry, law-enforcement agencies and groups concerned with civil liberties to identify new areas of research and explore better working practices.

Director of the Kingston University's renowned Digital Imaging Research Centre, Dr Sergio Velastin, is chairing the conference and said it was an honour for the University to be chosen to host the event. "We are proud to welcome the IET and our international colleagues to Kingston University," he said. "We are confident that the day will provide plenty of opportunities to share experiences and establish new collaborations between universities and those using these technologies which have become an integral part of daily life."
