Young Boxers Going Strong

Wednesday, 11 November, 2009

JABS Boxing Club continues to go from strength to strength with its young fighters recording more success in Leeds recently.

Three boxers from the club, established by PCSO Judith Allan, fought at a competition hosted by Sharky's Boxing Academy in Harehills last month.

Dean Donnelly from Catterick Village out-pointed his opponent, winning a hard-fought majority verdict from the judges, despite suffering a black eye, a cut lip and a bloody nose.

Robbie McHale from Catterick Garrison also claimed a majority decision in his first fight since joining the club.

The third JABS fighter on display was Jordan Nussey who was contesting his second bout and hoping to build on the success of his first fight. Unfortunately he narrowly lost an evenly matched contest on points.

PCSO Allan said: "This was a great experience for all three boys who fought really well on the night.

"Although Jordan narrowly lost out in his fight, which was really close, he learned a lot which he is confident of putting in to practice next time out.

"It was a hard fight for Dean but he bought the trophy home in the end. As for Robbie, he used all the skills he has been taught and produced a powerhouse performance, which was great for his first fight."

JABS Boxing Club was opened in April 2008 after PCSO Allan asked young people in the Richmondshire Area what they would like to do in their spare time.

By far the most popular choice was a boxing club which was set up at Marne Barracks, Catterick in a joint venture with Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership, the Army and several local businesses.

The club now boasts nearly 30 members, both male and female, between the ages of 11-18.

Training sessions are twice weekly from 6.30pm - 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, consisting of circuits, bag and pad work, shadow boxing and footwork followed by the opportunity to spar at the end.

PSCO Allan said: "The project provides positive interaction between the police and young people, helping to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.

"Boxing is a great way to keep fit and JABS are always looking to recruit more members. Anyone is welcome to come along."
