A police sergeant with Warwickshire Police is to share his knowledge and training expertise with international colleagues in Rwanda this month

Thursday, 13 March, 2008

Sgt Andy Timms who works at the Force Learning and Development Centre, will spend two weeks training future police trainers in Rwanda's capital Kigali. This follows the successful visit last year by Superintendent Chris Lewis.

Speaking about his visit to Rwanda, Sgt Timms said: "Combating crime in Rwanda poses different challenges to combating crime in Great Britain, but we can learn a great deal from one another.

"I expect to be lecturing 16 police officers, delivering basic lesson planning, talking about learning needs analysis and also explaining how different training methods achieve good results."

In November 2007 Supt Lewis, head of learning and development for the Force, was invited to deliver a leadership development programme to senior East African police officers in Rwanda. Over a four week period he lectured to officers from Rwanda, Tanzania, Sudan and Somalia, presenting development modules in police operations, the use of intelligence in policing and leadership and command.

This year as part of the ACPO International Affairs portfolio, Warwickshire Police has been appointed the lead force for liaison with police in Rwanda. The visit by Sgt Timms, that has been organised by the International Faculty of the National Police Improvement Agency (NPIA) in partnership with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, further progresses the new relationship with the Rwandan police.

Sgt Timms flys out to Rwanda on Saturday March 15 and returns on April 2. The visit is being funded by the National Police Improvement Agency and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
